You run the trucks. We keep the paperwork in order.

A back office for carriers with 1 to 10 trucks: DQ files, expiration dates, new-entrant audit prep, and UCR and MCS-150 filing help for owner-operators and small fleets. Prices are flat, and government fees go on their own line. If a filing is free to do yourself, we tell you that before we quote you anything.

Cab & Ledger is a private company. We are not affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT, the UCR Plan, or any government agency. Using us is optional.

A note from the office

Nobody gets authority because they love filing. Most of the paperwork gets done at night, after a long day or on your reset. Receipts sit in the door pocket, the med card date is one you're fairly sure is next spring, and the DQ file lives mostly in your head. The passenger floor is not a filing system.

Once your DOT number is public, the letters, texts and robocalls start, with official-looking names and a bill for filings that are free or close to it. Sorting real from fake is its own chore. And new carriers go through a safety audit, the new-entrant audit. It's manageable when the files are in order and the dates are current. It's a long night when they aren't.

We work in writing, by email, so you can answer when you're parked and keep a record of what was agreed. We prepare filings and you approve them; nothing goes to any agency without your OK. Our fee and the government fee are always two separate numbers. We'll never ask for your USDOT PIN, SSN, or bank or card numbers by text, email or phone call. And we don't cold call or cold text. We reply to people who write to us first.

What we handle

The back-office side of a small carrier. You keep running lanes; we keep the files and the dates.

Driver qualification files
We build each driver's DQ file and keep it current as documents come and go.
Expiration tracking
CDL, med card and annual record review dates, kept on one list so they show up ahead of time instead of as a surprise.
New-carrier audit prep
We go through your files with you before the new-entrant safety audit, so you know what's there and what's missing.
UCR and MCS-150 filing help
We prepare it, you approve it. Our fee and the government fee are shown as two separate numbers.
IFTA prep support
On the Fleet plan. Help getting miles by state and fuel receipts together for the quarter, so filing isn't a rebuild from memory.
Testing-program coordination
On the Fleet plan. Drug and alcohol testing-program coordination with a testing consortium, goMDnow. You enroll with goMDnow and pay them directly; we handle the coordination.

What we don't do. We don't give legal or tax advice. We don't sell insurance, factoring or dispatch. And we don't submit anything to any agency without your approval.

Before you pay anyone, including us

These are the two filings people get the most mail about. Here's where to do them yourself.

UCR

At the source: government fee only.

Register directly at ucr.gov, the UCR Plan's own registration site. You pay the government fee and nothing else. It isn't free, but there's no service charge when you file it yourself.

2027 government fees for carriers: $55 for 0 to 2 commercial vehicles, $167 for 3 to 5, and $333 for 6 to 20. Source: the UCR Plan's fee table.

2027 renewals are due before January 1.

MCS-150 update

At the source: free.

The update requirement still exists, and it's free to file yourself through FMCSA. Start at FMCSA's updating-your-registration page.

FMCSA's rules and systems changed in 2026, so check that page for the current status before you pay anyone to file your 150.

Got a letter, text or call about your DOT number?

Don't use the phone number or link in it. Go to FMCSA's fraud alerts page yourself (fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/fraud-alerts). FMCSA says it doesn't contact carriers by robocall or telemarketer.

We will never ask for your USDOT PIN, SSN, or bank or card numbers by text, email or phone call. Please don't email them to us either.

How it works

  1. Email [email protected] with what you need. The list of what to include is under Contact.
  2. We reply in writing: what's due, what's missing, what's free to do yourself, and a flat written quote for the rest. There's no charge for that reply, no obligation and no hard sell.
  3. If it makes sense, you approve the quote in writing by replying to the email. Or you don't. Government fees stay on their own line.
  4. We prepare the paperwork, keep the files and track the dates. You approve each filing before anything is filed.

Prices

Flat prices. Government fees are never folded into ours; they get their own line.

Questions people ask

Are you with the government?

No. Cab & Ledger is a private company. We aren't affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT, the UCR Plan, or any government agency. Using us is optional.

Why would I pay you if I can do it myself?

For a lot of single filings, you shouldn't, and we'll say so. What people pay for is the pile-up: keeping driver files complete, keeping the dates straight, and being ready for an audit.

Do you file things for me?

We prepare the filing. You approve it. Nothing goes to any agency without your OK. Government fees are separate from our fee and shown as their own number. We don't give legal or tax advice: we handle paperwork and point you to the source. For legal or tax questions, talk to an attorney or tax professional.

Is the MCS-150 update still something I need to do?

The update requirement still exists, and it's free to file yourself through FMCSA. FMCSA's rules and systems changed in 2026, so check FMCSA's registration page for the current status before you pay anyone to do it.

Do I need a driver file on myself if I'm the only driver?

It depends on how you're set up. Ask in your first email. We'll point you to where the rule is written so you can read it yourself.

Will you ask for my PIN, SSN or bank details, or call me out of the blue?

We'll never ask for those numbers by text, email or phone call. If someone using our name asks, it isn't us. Please don't email those numbers to us. We don't cold call or cold text either. We only reply to people who contact us first, and if you ask us to stop, we stop the same day, on every channel.

Who reads my email, a person or an AI?

Mostly AI. Our AI assistants answer email and send quotes, and they say so up front. Nothing is ever filed for you without your written approval.
